An interesting update on the new Newcastle United stadium and the new Newcastle United training ground.
The Times reporting on when we can expect to hear news of the plans the club have, where they intend to build them and just as important, when they expect these projects to be completed.
Ahead of the takeover, it was widely reported that a much bigger capacity Newcastle United stadium and a state of the art new Newcastle United training ground, would be massive priorities for the new Saudi Arabia PIF led ownership.
However, now only three weeks away from the fourth anniversary of the takeover eventually happening, nothing at all has been made public.
The club have repeatedly pushed back when these decisions are due to be made public.
This new report (see below) from The Times though, says that there is nothing unduly to worry about, in terms of fears the Newcastle United owners will rein back on ambition major projects for the club, in fact quite the opposite.
This has been mentioned previously by some of the more credible journalists who regularly cover Newcastle United, that it is simply a case of this is how the Saudi Arabia PIF work, that they never rush things and take it slowly, wanting to make sure they get their decision making absolutely correct for the long-term.
Writing for The Times, Martin Hardy says that with the new state of the art Newcastle United training ground that is the longer-term aim, two sites are believed to have been under consideration, one near Newcastle Airport and one close to Gosforth Park, both sites at present are home to golf courses.
The Times report that in the meantime, they understand more than £20m has been committed to improving the current training facilities, much needed after the woeful state of it due to Mike Ashley refusing to allow a penny to be spent on it more than the very minimum.
As for the new state of the art training ground, The Times say we should hopefully hear by the end of the year about what is planned, an announcement by the Newcastle United owners in either November or December is expected.
As for a far bigger Newcastle United stadium, the report says that it is expected that an announcement won’t come until the new year at the earliest.
Some interesting background given as well in the report, insight into exactly how the Saudi Arabia PIF operate, especially with regard to Newcastle United.
‘It was all supposed to have happened much more quickly, but multiple sources close to PIF insist this is its way, to go through its process.
The Public Investment Fund Tower in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia cost £1billion and stands 385 metres high. It houses close to 3,000 staff who tend to the estimated £940billion worth of PIF investments, both in Saudi Arabia (80 per cent) and around the world (the remaining 20 per cent, which includes Newcastle). As many as 30 staff can at any time be working on Newcastle, with three or four always looking after the club’s legal and administrative matters.
PIF’s philosophy has been one of cautious and deliberate progress, and there are no plans for that to change in the short term.
It has been careful not to push the boundaries of the Premier League’s rules around Associated Party Transactions, for example, even though Manchester City have reached a settlement this week which is expected to allow them to complete a lucrative sponsorship deal with Etihad.
An insider revealed there is now a core of PIF executives who have been involved with Newcastle since day one of its ownership, including Jacobo Solis, who, along with being head of European direct investments at PIF, is now also on the Newcastle board, having joined at the start of 2025.
