Just two years ago, Santiago Castañeda was playing in the 3. Liga for MSV Duisburg. The American midfielder, then playing for Tampa Bay Rowdies in the USL, was only 18 when he made the move to Germany. Now at SC Paderborn 07, Castañeda has played a key role in helping his side return to the Bundesliga.
Castañeda started and played every minute of Paderborn's two-legged tie against VfL Wolfsburg. He nearly opened the scoring for his side in the 35th minute, but Wolfsburg goalkeeper Kamil Grabara got down low to make a big save. Eventually, though, Wolfsburg's defense broke, with Paderborn winning 2-1 in extra time to return to the Bundesliga.
Paderborn signed Castañeda from Duisburg in 2024 on a free transfer, and the American immediately became a key player. In his first season in the 2. Bundesliga, the midfielder made 32 appearances as Paderborn finished just four points away from promotion.
This season, Castañeda again played a crucial role. He started 27 games, including five straight to close out the season as Paderborn scraped into third place on the final matchday. That meant the club would face top-flight side VfL Wolfsburg with a spot in the Bundesliga on the line. Castañeda and Paderborn delivered.
He joins a growing list of Americans playing in the Bundesliga. Last year, eleven American players made appearances in Germany's top flight, including some who are expected to represent the team this summer at the World Cup, like Malik Tillman, Gio Reyna, and Joe Scally.
Castañeda was not the only American involved in the Bundesliga play-off. Kevin Paredes was the first man off the bench for VfL Wolfsburg, but the 23-year-old was unable to make a difference as Dieter Hecking's side were relegated.
