The United States U-20 team transformed from shaky starters to dominant group winners at the Concacaf Championship, sweeping all three matches with 11 goals scored and none conceded ahead of their crucial quarterfinal against Guatemala.

Gonzalo Segares' squad topped Mexico on goal difference for the tournament's best overall record, earning a matchup with eighth-placed Guatemala. The winner advances to the 2027 U-20 World Cup in Chile.

After an unconvincing 3-0 win over Haiti where penalties masked offensive struggles, the Americans found their rhythm. They controlled El Salvador with 71% possession before unleashing their best performance against Cuba — a 5-0 rout that featured goals from five different scorers.

Key performers emerge despite missing stars

Din Klapija and Christopher Cupps have led the attack with crucial goals, while late addition Cooper Sanchez from Atlanta United provided an immediate boost. The team is competing without several age-eligible players who are already with senior MLS clubs or the full national team.

The loss of Charlotte FC winger Nimfasha Berchimas to a calf injury against El Salvador removes the team's primary dribbling threat. Berchimas confirmed on social media that his tournament is over, calling it "another setback" in his young career.

Evolution through the group stage

Against El Salvador, the Americans dominated territorially but still relied on two penalties for their 2-0 win. Klapija drew and converted the first after pressuring a defensive error, while Rubén Ramos (LA Galaxy) scored the second after Jaidyn Contreras (FC Dallas) was fouled in the box. Cupps added a late third from close range.

The Cuba match showed real progress. Despite six lineup changes, the U.S. scored within two minutes through Contreras and added four more in a complete performance. The variety of scorers — including defenders and midfielders — demonstrated improved offensive fluidity that had been missing earlier.

Four of the team's first six goals came from penalties, highlighting initial struggles to create from open play. By the Cuba match, that dependency disappeared as the team found multiple routes to goal through combination play and individual quality.

Guatemala quarterfinal decides World Cup fate

The knockout round begins with immediate stakes: only semifinalists qualify for the U-20 World Cup. Guatemala finished second in Group B behind Costa Rica, setting up a classic Concacaf clash where the Americans' newfound momentum meets elimination pressure.

Segares must decide whether to return to his strongest XI or continue rotating after the Cuba performance proved his depth. With Berchimas out, Dylan Vanney or another wide player will need to provide the pace and directness the team loses without the Charlotte attacker.
