Valencia City Council has approved an agreement with Valencia CF to regulate use of the Nou Mestalla, explicitly covering any matches the stadium could host at the 2030 FIFA World Cup. According to Superdeporte, the pact marks a fresh step towards bringing major events to the city.

On 27 March, RFEF president Rafael Louzán formally proposed to FIFA that Nou Mestalla and Balaídos in Vigo be added to the 2030 host list, replacing Málaga and A Coruña, which had officially withdrawn. Spain, Morocco and Portugal are set to organise the tournament.

Sports councillor Rocío Gil said the agreement is intended to enable Valencia to stage top-tier men’s and women’s events, highlighting international athletics and leading football competitions at national and international level, including the World Cup.

She added that both parties included the World Cup provision because they hope Valencia could be selected to host a match in Spain. The agreement carries no cost for the council, runs for four years and is extendable by a further four.

Under the terms, the council can use the stadium on Avenida de les Corts Valencianes for elite athletics. In football, this covers three scenarios: European club finals such as the Champions League, Europa League or Conference League, domestic cup finals including the Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina, and official international fixtures for national teams like the Nations League, European Championship or World Cup.

The deal also aims to secure free municipal use for events of special relevance, establish a stable framework for institutional collaboration and formalise Valencia’s obligations to support that cooperation.
