Valencia are awaiting official confirmation of Kang In Lee’s move to Atlético Madrid, and are preparing to pocket a slice of the fee via FIFA’s solidarity mechanism.

According to Superdeporte, the scheme allocates five percent of a transfer to the clubs that trained the player between ages 12 and 23, apportioned by time spent. Mallorca, who signed him at 20, are due 1.5 percent, with Valencia set for 3.5 percent.

With the deal worth around €40 million including add-ons, Valencia are in line for about €1.4 million, money not factored into this summer’s planning.

The FIFA payout salvages a small slice after a terribly negligent 2021 decision, when Valencia let the South Korean leave for Mallorca for nothing and no sell-on, rushing to register Marcos André. They then paid €8.5 million for a striker from the second tier.

Time has drawn the contrast. Valladolid are eager to move André on, while Kang In Lee has played at World Cups and won two Champions Leagues, costing many millions. At least, not through the merits of their decision-makers, Valencia will not be left empty-handed for having overseen most of his development.
