Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Valentin Barco from RC Strasbourg.

The 22-year-old was expected to make the switch to Stamford Bridge after a pre-agreement was reached between the BlueCo clubs.

Barco becomes the latest summer signing after the pre-agreed arrivals of Geovany Quenda and Emmanuel Emegha, as well as Marco Palestra, Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix and Danny Welbeck.

The versatile Argentine was involved at the 2026 World Cup with his country and will join up with the Chelsea squad after his extended holiday.

He will be familiar with several players, including Mike Penders, Mamadou Sarr and Emegha after their time in France together, as well as fellow countryman Enzo Fernandez.

Barco confirmed he was departing Strasbourg in May after penning a farewell message at the end of the season.

"Today it’s time for me to say goodbye to this club, which I joined with such enthusiasm," Barco wrote on Instagram on May 18.

"Over the past year and a half, I’ve had some wonderful moments, including the best day of our lives, @yaz.jaureguy, on 28 March 2025 when Gemma was born.

"I always gave my all on the pitch in every match for this shirt. I’d like to thank my team-mates, who made everything easier for me; Liam and his staff for the trust they placed in me and for helping me become the player I am today; Gary and his staff for understanding me and helping me improve; everyone who works at the club and who stands by us and supports us every day; and the fans for the affection they’ve always shown me.

"From afar, I’ll be cheering them on and keeping my fingers crossed that they always win. I’m incredibly grateful to Strasbourg, and my family and I will come back whenever we can - it’s a very special place in our lives."

Barco does offer Premier League experience for Chelsea after his time at Brighton and Hove Albion, which saw him make six league appearances.

He is not the final midfield signing this summer. Jordan Henderson has passed his Chelsea medical and is set to pen a two-year contract in west London.

Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott has been the subject of a rejected bid from Chelsea, suggested to be in excess of £60 million, and it remains unclear whether the Blues will improve their bid.

Barco has penned a seven-year contract at Chelsea until June 2033.

Chelsea have yet to confirm Barco's number. He wore the number 32 shirt at Strasbourg, which is currently vacant following Tyrique George's departure to Everton.

Barco is currently on his holidays and is likely to return only a couple of weeks before the new season gets underway on August 24.
