Irrespective of a dreadful Premier League form, Tottenham Hotspur have secured a ‘top eight’ finish in the Europa League following a commanding 3-0 win against Elfsborg. They will now directly contest in the Round of 16 after avoiding the play-off phase fixtures, yet the future of Ange Postecoglou hangs by a thread ahead of travelling to West London to clash heads with Brentford on Sunday afternoon. Although the Bees have been a dominant force in their own backyard, the Aussie boss must secure a result to climb up the league ladder from the 15th spot.
They also have a tricky midweek tie against Liverpool in the leg 2 of the EFL Cup semi-final. Despite having the edge over the Reds following a 1-0 home win in the first leg, a two-goal defeat at Anfield would not only shatter their quest for the silverware but also could draw an end to Postecoglou’s exciting yet futile stint in North London.
Tottenham suffered a 2-1 humiliation at home against Leicester City in the previous gameweek. They brought in Antonin Kinsky earlier this month in the wake of Guglielmo Vicario’s long-term injury, but the young custodian has been below-par between the sticks. Brandon Austin has done well in limited opportunities, but the gaffer is expected to rely on the Czech shot-stopper for his ball-playing ability.

Ever-present Pedro Porro remains irreplacable down the right for his marauding runs and attacking expertise. Fit-again Left fullback Djed Spence could get the nod over Ben Davies and Sergio Reguilon amid the absence of Destiny Udogie. Cristian Romero needs a few more days to regain match fitness, but the return of Micky van de Ven is a welcome boost in the heart of the backline. Meanwhile, Radu Dragusin suffered a setback on Thursday night which leaves the Lilywhites with 18-year-old Archie Gray as the Dutchman’s only available central defensive partner.
Postecoglou took Rodrigo Bentancur off at half-time alongside Van de Ven and Heung-min Son to keep them fit and fresh for the Brentford outing. The Uruguayan must orchestrate the game from his deep-lying role, and his presence at the base would allow Lucas Bergvall and Pape Sarr to make down-the-middle runs as the chief ball carriers. Yves Bissouma could be introduced as a substitute, however, James Maddison’s injury woe limits their creative spark in the middle of the park.
Injuries to Dominic Solanke, Timo Werner, Wilson Odobert and Brennan Johnson decimate Tottenham high up the pitch. But they have three experienced attackers in Son, Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski who must exhibit their poaching traits while spearheading the attack.
