For elite footballers, longevity is often spoken about as a gift. For Virgil van Dijk, it is something far less mysterious. The Liverpool captain believes years of consistency at the highest level have been built on a foundation of discipline, sacrifice and relentless attention to detail.
Speaking in Liverpool FC’s official eMagazine WALK ON, van Dijk reflected on a season that further strengthened his reputation as one of football’s most reliable performers. The Dutch defender was the only outfield player to play every minute of a Premier League campaign in 2025-26, a remarkable achievement given the physical demands of modern football.
As van Dijk prepares to lead the Netherlands at the World Cup before returning to Anfield for another season, his focus remains unchanged. At almost 35 years of age, he continues to set standards that younger players across Liverpool’s squad are encouraged to follow.

When asked about the secret behind his durability, van Dijk’s answer was immediate and emphatic.
“Discipline, discipline and discipline!”
It is a phrase that perfectly captures the mindset that has underpinned his Liverpool career. Since arriving from Southampton in January 2018, van Dijk has become one of the defining figures of an era that delivered major honours and transformed Liverpool into one of Europe’s dominant clubs.
“For me it is something that is quite normal because I feel the responsibility to be there every time and also to perform every time,” he explained.
That sense of responsibility has been a recurring theme throughout his career. While many players speak about availability being important, van Dijk has consistently demonstrated it. Excluding the long-term knee injury that disrupted one campaign, he has routinely surpassed the 40-match mark across his seasons at Liverpool.
The statistics underline that commitment. Across eight full seasons at Anfield, van Dijk has accumulated 374 appearances while helping Liverpool secure two league titles.
The original source, Liverpool FC’s official website, detailed how van Dijk’s preparation away from matches is just as important as his performances during them.
“So, yes, it is a combination of recovering well, eating well, the right lifestyle in total, also physical therapy. I can’t tell you the details, but yoga, everything. That’s part of it, to make sure that you can perform at a constant level.”
Those habits have become increasingly important as the defender has moved through his thirties. While many players experience a decline in physical performance, van Dijk has remained a commanding presence at the heart of Liverpool’s defence.
His consistency is not accidental. Instead, it is the result of years spent refining routines and understanding exactly what his body requires to remain at peak condition.
“I’ve had one season here that unfortunately I had to miss a lot of, but in the rest of the seasons I think I’ve played more than 40 matches.”
The defender also admitted surprise when learning one of the most demanding campaigns of his career came immediately after returning from serious injury.
“That’s quite remarkable. When I heard that I thought it was quite interesting.”
Van Dijk’s role at Liverpool extends far beyond his performances on the pitch. As captain, he has become a reference point for younger players entering the first-team environment.
“I’m in a situation where obviously I am the oldest in the team. But for me, it doesn’t really change anything.”
Rather than relying solely on words, van Dijk believes leadership is best demonstrated through daily actions.
“I just want to inspire, let other players see what I do in order to be playing the amount of games I’ve been playing and the consistency that I have.”
That approach reflects the culture Liverpool have built over recent years, where standards are established through example as much as instruction.
Looking back on his journey at Anfield, van Dijk believes additional responsibility helped mould him into the player supporters see today.
“I joined eight-and-a-half years ago and six months later I was named third captain. That responsibility made me also the player that I am today.”
His influence has grown with each passing season, culminating in his appointment as club captain and his status as one of the most respected defenders in world football.
“It has been a privilege as well.”
As Liverpool prepare for another demanding campaign, van Dijk’s longevity remains one of the club’s greatest assets. His message is clear. There is no magic formula, no hidden shortcut and no secret miracle treatment. Success at the highest level comes from discipline, commitment and a willingness to make the right decisions every single day.
For van Dijk, those principles have produced a career defined by consistency. For Liverpool, they have delivered one of the finest defenders in the club’s modern history.
