James Bell, the VAR involved in major calls at Old Trafford last weekend, will monitor Brighton against Crystal Palace from Stockley Park, with Thomas Bramall refereeing at the Amex on Sunday.
According to TheArgus.co.uk, Bell is regarded as a skilled operator who has progressed through the VAR Enhanced Training Programme.
His judgement was most recently required when Manchester United played Fulham on Sunday. He advised that a foul by Jorge Cuenca on Matheus Cunha, which had prompted a penalty, occurred outside the box, causing confusion. Silva felt the spot kick related to a subsequent fair tackle and said the VAR looked elsewhere to find a reason for a free-kick.
United scored from the resulting free-kick. Bell later took four minutes to confirm a marginal offside against Fulham that saw a goal disallowed.
Bramall oversaw Albion’s recent 1-1 draw at Manchester City. His five previous Albion appointments have all been away from home and did not involve major controversy, and none produced an Albion win.
He was most recently in Championship action when Hull won 1-0 at Blackburn. His season tally stands at 19 games across all competitions, with 68 yellow cards and three reds.
The rest of Sunday’s officiating team comprises assistants Lee Betts and Simon Long, fourth official Sam Barrott, and assistant VAR Nick Hopton.
