Tottenham Hotspur’s first-half penalty at the Stadium of Light was overturned after VAR concluded Omar Alderete played the ball.

Referee Rob Jones initially awarded a spot-kick midway through the first half when Randal Kolo Muani drove into the Sunderland area, Alderete challenged and Luke O’Nien slid in.

After a review by VAR official James Bell, Jones went to the monitor. Replays showed Alderete touched the ball before Muani went to ground, with O’Nien’s challenge following.

The penalty was rescinded and play restarted with a drop ball to Sunderland.

The referee’s announcement said: “After review, home 15 clearly plays the ball first, before any subsequent contact. Final decision is a drop ball to the goalkeeper. No penalty.”
