The game's flashpoint came when Caleta-Car was sent off for a heavy tackle on Manu Fernández.
In the 47th minute, referee Alberola initially booked the Croatian, then, after a VAR review, upgraded it to red, Diario Vasco reports.
At the time, Real led by one thanks to an Oyarzabal goal.
The decision stirred debate, with many Real supporters feeling a yellow would have sufficed given the challenge came in midfield near the touchline, far from the box.
Caleta-Car went in forcefully after failing to nick the ball at the first attempt, then launched into a loose ball with Celta’s Manu Fernández. He missed the ball and caught the Galician’s ankle.
With rain leaving the pitch heavy, Real faced a demanding second half as they chased three points.
