Varela has paid tribute to Filipe Luís after Flamengo dismissed the head coach in the early hours of Tuesday, according to Coluna Do Fla. The full-back posted an emotional message on social media.

In an Instagram post, Guillermo Varela called Filipe Luís an idol in every sense, praised his professionalism and dedication, said he will always be a reference and always be Flamengo, and ended by saying they love him. His note followed messages from Jorginho, Arrascaeta and Bruno Henrique.

Filipe Luís conducted his post-match press conference as normal on Monday, after the 8-0 win over Madureira in the Carioca semi-final. His departure was then confirmed in the early hours of the following day.

Varela became a key figure under Filipe Luís, establishing himself as first choice. He played an active part in Flamengo’s Copa do Brasil, Campeonato Carioca, Brasileirão and Libertadores titles.

Flamengo are in talks to appoint Portuguese coach Leonardo Jardim. Talks are advanced after a meeting on Monday, with formalisation expected in the coming days.
