Vasco have reached agreement with Racing to sign 27-year-old Argentine midfielder Santiago Sosa on an initial loan with an option that becomes an obligation if targets are met, worth around US$ eight million. According to PaponaColina, documents have been exchanged and the club now awaits court authorisation and the player's signature before making it official.
Director of football Admar Lopes spent the week in Argentina in direct talks with Racing's board. Talks stalled over the size of the upfront payment and a higher asking price, which delayed the outcome despite a verbal agreement for two days.
Sosa's determination to join proved decisive in unlocking the move to Brazil. He can operate as a holding midfielder or at centre-back, and had been Racing's captain. He is not expected to play again for the Argentine side.
An unusual hurdle also had to be cleared. Because of the deal's size and the court case that removed and later reinstated Pedrinho as president, Vasco must submit their financial plan and obtain court approval, a requirement that held up the paperwork. The process is under way.
Sosa was part of River Plate's 2018 Copa Libertadores-winning squad, joined Atlanta United in MLS, then returned to Racing, where he won the 2024 Copa Sudamericana, beating Cruzeiro in the final. This is set to be Vasco's first addition of the window, and once formalities are complete the Cruz-Maltino expect to confirm a midfield reinforcement.
