Vasco supporters staged a provocative display aimed at Fluminense as the teams walked out at the Maracanã on Thursday night for the first leg of the Copa do Brasil semi-final.

According to Globo.com, the North Stand unveiled a three-dimensional mosaic featuring Eddie the Head, Iron Maiden’s mascot. He was shown holding a tricolour shirt, a letter C in one hand and a scythe in the other.

Flags and balloons bearing the same letter also appeared in that section, an allusion to Fluminense having played in the third division in 1999.

The display also referenced the clubs’ dispute over the Maracanã. In recent years they have argued about the South Stand, traditionally associated with Vasco fans since the club became the stadium’s first champions in 1950.

Since the venue came under the Fla-Flu duo’s management, the tricolores have had that section fixed by contract. Thursday’s image carried the phrase “O Maraca é nosso”.
