Vasco have made the Brasileirão their top priority for 2026, with Bahia visiting São Januário on Wednesday at 21:30 Brasília time. According to Globo.com, the league now leads the club’s season planning.

In 2025, the approach differed, with the Copa Sudamericana set as the main objective and league rotation used.

The club exited the Sudamericana in the play-offs to Independiente del Valle, and went further in the Copa do Brasil, finishing runners-up.

There was internal frustration with the league run-in, seven defeats in the last eight games leaving them 14th. Four straight wins early in the second half of the season had raised hopes of a Libertadores push that never materialised.

The intention for 2026 is to use maximum strength in the league and manage workloads in the Campeonato Carioca, Copa do Brasil and Copa Sudamericana.

The squad has been bolstered by six signings since the window opened, and the board are still seeking a starting defensive midfielder. They are otherwise satisfied and have handed the work to Diniz, believing the group can compete more strongly in the top half.

Diniz’s side have one point from the first two rounds, sitting 13th after a 2-1 loss at Mirassol and a 1-1 home draw with Chapecoense.
