With the domestic window closing on 27 March, Vasco consider new signings unlikely and will prioritise internal solutions under Renato Gaúcho, according to Globo.com.

Renato has not asked for specific additions. Staff and board plan a mid-year push, when stronger opportunities, particularly in Europe, are expected.

Defensive midfield is the priority. With a tight budget, the club are exploring loans or expiring contracts, having already spent heavily and set aside funds for the second window.

From April, a congested schedule should accelerate auditions. Vasco have 17 matches to late May across the Brasileirão, Copa Sudamericana group stage and the fifth phase of the Copa do Brasil.

Marino Hinestroza, signed amid high hopes, has been on the bench in Renato’s three games, with Nuno Moreira and Adson currently ahead.

At centre-back, Carlos Cuesta has yet to play under Renato and was a substitute against Fluminense after knee trouble. In training he has alternated with Saldivia alongside Robert Renan, with Saldivia currently first choice.

JP impressed late on against Cruzeiro. With Renato using three holding midfielders and recent bans for Thiago Mendes and Barros, JP was the only specialist on the bench and could gain further minutes.

Before the FIFA dates, Vasco host Grêmio on Sunday at 16:00, Brasília time, at São Januário. Renato is unbeaten with two wins and one draw, and the team are 10th on eight points.
