Vasco are still hunting a new head coach as the squad report back on Monday at CT Moacyr Barbosa, and it is likely there will still be no final decision. According to Globo.com, the club want to move quickly.
The board have a shortlist, including candidates considered before Renato’s appointment in March, but none commands unanimous support. The new man will walk into a defined set of priorities.
Internally, the task is to revive out-of-form players and to maximise the recent signings. Six additions cost more than R$ 100 million, and the view is that all can produce more in the second half of the year.
Rebuilding confidence is seen as crucial. Brenner is the emblematic case, with the club aiming to get him back on track during the World Cup break. Signed for about R$ 30 million, he is not being pushed out and is backed to regain form.
Vasco also judged a reset of the environment essential before training resumed. Relations between parts of the dressing room and Renato Gaúcho had deteriorated, which drove the decision to part company.
The club aim to hire a coach with strong man-management who can work better with the foreign contingent. There are eight overseas players, and discomfort grew after recent comments, including when asked about Marino Hinestroza the coach said players born in Colombia and Ecuador find it very difficult to adapt to Brazilian football.
