Vasco returned to work on Monday afternoon, resuming training at CT Moacyr Barbosa after the holiday period. Assistant Bruno Lazaroni led the session as the club remain without a head coach.
According to Globo.com, the opening day included medicals, testing and player assessments after 21 days without a game. The team last played on 31 May, a 1-0 home defeat to Atlético-MG at São Januário.
The day also brought the first address from Fred Luz, the new SAF CEO, to staff and squad. He replaces Carlos Amodeo, who ended his deal early ahead of its 9 July expiry, and the club has named Ricardo Abreu as COO.
Left-back Paulinho, previously at América-MG, arrived in Rio de Janeiro on Monday morning to finalise paperwork after agreeing a pre-contract earlier in the year. He will join training in the coming days and be announced shortly.
The board are now working to appoint a new head coach after deciding to part with Renato Gaúcho during the league pause. Talks have been held with the Portuguese coach Vasco Matos, but there is no offer on the table. Other targets being assessed include Gallardo and Hernán Crespo.
Vasco have fewer than a month to prepare before returning to action. They face Vitória on 16 July in the 19th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro.
