Sitting on an expiring contract, the future of SV Werder Bremen central defender Milos Veljkovic remains unclear after this season. Recent performances from the German club he's represented for eight years suggest that Veljkovic might get a chance to play European football with the Hanseaten next season. The 29-year-old may nevertheless get a chance to play Champions' League much sooner, however, if reports from Serbian media sources are to be believed.
Bremen's reliable "Deichstube" fan-site cites said sources in claiming that Red Star Belgrade are interested in picking Veljkovic up during the coming January transfer window. In reporting on the rumors, Germany's Kicker Magazine claims that Veljkovic has already been spotted in public donning a Red Star scarf.
The 35-times-capped Serbian international, largely due to hard luck with injuries, has only featured six times (four starts) for Bremen this season. With Marco Friedl, Niklas Stark, and Anthony Jung firmly entrenched in Ole Werner's back-three, the player who has represented Werder a total of 253 times may have trouble earning minutes in the new calendar year.
As he entered the final year of his contract, Veljkovic was linked with moves abroad this summer. Reported potential moves to Atalanta Bergamo and Osasuna never materialized. Veljkovic retains an estimated market worth of €4.5 million in the latest transfermarkt listings and his German club would presumably be happy to cash in on his value.
