Veríssimo denies retreat, cites inexperience as Santos draw with San Lorenzo | OneFootball

Lucas Veríssimo insisted Santos did not sit back after taking a 2-0 lead in their 2-2 draw with San Lorenzo at Vila Belmiro. He said smarter game management was missing.

According to Diario Do Peixe, the captain felt they should have slowed the tempo and kept the ball, adding that inexperience in seeing games out showed.

Veríssimo started and wore the armband. Already on a booking tightrope, he collected his third yellow card and will miss the final group match against Deportivo Cuenca on Tuesday 26 at 21:30, also at Vila Belmiro.

After the penultimate round, San Lorenzo of Argentina top the group on seven points, Cuenca have six, Recoleta five and Santos four.

Santos can still progress only as runners-up, which would mean a playoff before the last 16. To take second they must beat Cuenca and hope San Lorenzo draw with Recoleta or the Argentines win. They will not finish second if Recoleta win.
