The FC Barcelona presidential elections are drawing closer, and the candidates have begun to position themselves and outline their plans for the future. Early next year, members will once again decide who will guide La Blaugrana through a crucial period in its history.
Setting the stage for a compelling election campaign, former FC Barcelona presidential candidate Victor Font gave the concluding speech during the launch of a new platform, ‘Nosaltres Barça,‘ on Monday night at the Fira de Barcelona.
The event, which united supporters from various factions of Barcelonismo, served as the formal confirmation of Font’s intention to once again run for the club’s highest office in the upcoming elections.
The Granollers businessman immediately positioned himself as the primary alternative to the current leadership of president Joan Laporta, promising a different management model.
Addressing an audience of approximately one thousand people, as reported by Mundo Deportivo, Font presented a stark contrast between two paths for the club. He emphasized that his project is founded on putting Barça’s interests before personal ones.
“Today I am especially excited to take the lead of this project that goes far beyond Victor Font. A project formed by Barcelonistas who put Barça’s interests ahead of personal interests. The club faces two paths, but only one is honest and correct.”
Font then launched his critique against the current administration, labelling it the “I and only I” path.
“The first is the path of personalism, improvisation, the loud and flashy approach, sometimes entertaining and sometimes embarrassing. The ‘me and only me’ path. The path of friends, acquaintances, and associates who, if they criticize, are treated as traitors; the path of self-deception that strays from excellence and, worst of all, from the members.”
He argued that a superior alternative exists, one characterized by responsibility, planning, and transparency.
“There is another path, the one taken by those who listen and plan and have nothing to hide. The path of respect, honesty, and well-done work, one that does not rely solely on the ball going in. It is the path that begins today, the path of all of us,” Font concluded, with the powerful declaration: “When Barça is unstoppable, Catalonia and Barça are unstoppable. Visca el Barça and visca Catalunya.”
The event featured other voices echoing the need for change, particularly concerning the club’s finances. Jaume Guardiola, former president of FC Barcelona’s Economic Commission and former CEO of Banc Sabadell, questioned the club’s spending and transparency.
“Why does Barça need to pay a commission for anything and everything? It is something unheard of. We have the right to know what is done and with whom it is done.”
Victor Font’s presidential announcement was bolstered by the presence of several influential figures. Former FC Barcelona coach Xavi Hernández was among the attendees, a highly significant show of support.
Font ran against Laporta in 2021 and has strongly opposed the latter’s methods ever since. He came across as a man with a clear vision for Barcelona then, and it seems to have intensified since.
Laporta, by contrast, is a charismatic president whose decisions have shaped the club’s future over the past five years. Some have been strange, while others have looked like masterstrokes, making for a mixed record.
