The atmosphere inside the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium reached boiling point on Thursday night as Kylian Mbappe became the main target of furious Real Madrid supporters during the clash against Real Oviedo.
In what should have been a routine evening for Madrid, the match instead turned into one of the most toxic nights seen at the Bernabeu in recent years.
The stands were filled with banners aimed directly at club president Florentino Perez, carrying messages such as “Florentino, resign”, “Florentino is to blame” and “Florentino, go now”.
At the same time, Mbappe found himself at the centre of the storm from the very beginning.
As the Frenchman warmed up before kick-off, loud boos echoed around the stadium every time his image appeared on the big screen.
The loudest moment of the night arrived in the 69th minute when Mbappe finally entered the pitch.
The French superstar replaced academy striker Gonzalo Garcia, who had already scored and received warm applause from the home crowd.
In complete contrast, Mbappe was greeted by a deafening wave of boos that immediately swept across the Bernabeu.
The reaction quickly became one of the biggest talking points of the night.
Every touch from Mbappe was followed by whistles and jeers from sections of the crowd, creating an atmosphere rarely experienced by a player of his stature at Real Madrid.
Despite the hostility, Mbappe appeared calm throughout the situation.
Cameras repeatedly showed the forward smiling during the closing stages of the match, even as the tension around the stadium continued to rise.
Interestingly, the scenes also seemed to have little effect on his mother, Fayza Lamari, who was present in one of the stadium boxes.
As seen through the cameras, she laughed off the intense reaction directed towards her son.
At most clubs, a player arriving with Mbappe’s reputation would receive patience and protection. At Real Madrid, however, that patience appears to have worn off.
