Aston Villa are close to finalising the signing of Marco Bizot from Brest, as reported by The Athletic. The 34-year-old will arrive for a low-cost fee and is set to become the club’s No. 2 goalkeeper behind Emiliano Martinez. This move follows the departure of Robin Olsen, who left at the end of his contract and has since joined Malmo.
Bizot brings a wealth of experience and consistency. Regarded as a dependable figure between the sticks, he will provide solid cover for Martinez, should the Argentine remain at Villa Park. “Bizot is regarded as a reliable understudy for Emiliano Martinez, provided the Argentina international stays at Villa.”
Emiliano Martinez’s future has been a subject of quiet uncertainty. The Athletic revealed the 32-year-old’s representatives had been in dialogue with Manchester United since the start of 2025. While no offers have materialised, the discussions suggest Martinez was open to new opportunities. Villa, however, expect him to report for pre-season.

Bizot began his career at Ajax and made 41 appearances for Brest last season, including nine in the Champions League. “Background checks on his character have come back favourably, with his experience and willingness to join also key factors.” He has earned one senior cap for the Netherlands, debuting in a 2020 friendly against Spain.
With Bizot’s arrival close to completion, Villa now turn their attention to other areas. “Villa have fulfilled and remain in pursuit of a defender and winger.” The club’s pre-season begins against Walsall on June 16, followed by a home opener against Newcastle United to kick off the Premier League season.
This is a smart bit of business. Villa needed a calm, experienced head to back up Martinez and Bizot fits the bill perfectly. At 34, he’s not here to demand the shirt but to support the squad with his know-how and Champions League pedigree. Having made over 40 appearances for Brest last season and holding his own in Europe, he adds depth without drama.
Fans might be relieved that Martinez is expected to return to pre-season. The talk of Manchester United sniffing around was unsettling, especially given his status as a fan favourite. If that move ever does materialise, at least Villa are not caught short. Bizot’s arrival means there is a contingency in place, which hasn’t always been the case in recent years.
Still, the work isn’t done. Strengthening in defence and on the wings is vital. If Unai Emery wants to build on last season’s progress and compete on multiple fronts, Villa need to bolster wide options and ensure the back line has enough depth to deal with Europe and the Premier League grind.
Bizot is a box ticked. Now it’s time to push on.
