Villarreal missed a golden chance to take a big step towards next season's Champions League. They lost 1-0 at Montilivi to Girona on Monday, Pau Navarro's own goal deciding it as Marcelino García Toral's side barely threatened.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the visitors produced a flat display, reflected in low player ratings.

Mikautadze was the standout at six, the only Villarreal player to unsettle Girona and creator of their two best chances. Goalkeeper Luiz Júnior also earned six, making two second-half saves, while Comesaña's industry merited six despite Girona's midfield superiority.

Mouriño, checked by an early booking, had to handle Ounahi and was given five. Renato Veiga dealt with crosses but made a glaring error and lacked dominance, five. Pedraza offered little before the interval, struggled against Arnau and the decisive cross came from his flank, five.

Pape Gueye showed his physical edge in spells yet this was not his night, five. Gerard Moreno linked play in the final third and had the chance to equalise, five.

Navarro was marked down to four, unfortunate with the own goal and less assured in his distribution. From the bench, Alfon was a five without end product, Freeman a hurried five and Buchanan a four with no impact.
