Villarreal to part company with Marcelino at season end | OneFootball

Villarreal will part company with head coach Marcelino at the end of the season, the club said in a statement on Monday that also thanked him and his staff for their professionalism and hard work.

Saturday’s 5-1 win over Levante sealed qualification for next season’s Champions League with four matches to play. Villarreal sit third in La Liga on 68 points.

Marcelino, 60, returned in 2023 after his short stint at Marseille. It is his second spell at the club following a first tenure from 2013 to 2016.

Across six years in charge he has overseen 298 matches, the most in the club’s history, and holds the record for wins with 145.

In his first tenure he led Villarreal back to La Liga in 2013, also reaching the Copa del Rey semi-finals in 2015 and the Europa League semi-finals in 2016.

His second stint has delivered back-to-back Champions League qualifications in 2024-2025 and 2025-2026, a first for the club. Villarreal did not give reasons for his exit and will hold a tribute at the final league match against Atlético Madrid on 24 May.
