This was no ordinary derby. Villarreal came from behind in the first half to beat Valencia at Estadio de la Cerámica, taking three vital points in their push for a Champions League return and leaving their neighbours near the drop zone.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, around 600 Valencia supporters travelled despite the club’s delicate situation and the exchanges were as fierce as ever. Away fans taunted Villarreal as a feeder team, while the home end aimed chants at Peter Lim and jeered about relegation.
When Ramazani converted from the spot the away section erupted, but their joy was brief as the hosts produced a rapid turnaround. After the final whistle the groguet crowd revelled in the result and made sure their neighbours heard it.
Post-match, La Morocha rang out around La Cerámica and several Villarreal players formed a centre-circle huddle to celebrate.
Referee Jesús Gil Manzano was again central and booed by home fans. He missed a first-minute stamp by Javi Guerra on Nicolas Pepe and initially overlooked a Ramazani handball before the 2-1 call, then pointed to the spot. After two errors, the refereeing committee will sideline him.
Released VAR audio captured officials recommending a review for the handball, noting an extended arm inside the area, then advising on Valencia’s penalty after goalkeeper contact and ending with a yellow card decision. The technology did not intervene on the early Guerra-Pepe incident.
Asked about the officiating and the three penalties Gil Manzano did not spot, Marcelino replied by covering his mouth, an ironic response that spoke volumes.
