André Villas-Boas has matched Franz Beckenbauer by becoming a national champion as both coach and president, after Porto sealed the league in May 2026. The 48-year-old achieved the rare double in his second season as president.

In 2010/11, his second season as a head coach, he won the Supertaça, Primeira Liga, Taça de Portugal and Europa League at 33. He later took the Russian title with Zenit, having long signalled his coaching career would be short.

Beckenbauer, initially a team manager without a licence, led Germany to the 1990 World Cup. In 1994 he stepped in at Bayern to win the Bundesliga by one point, then lifted the UEFA Cup the following season, before later triumphing as club president.

Porto’s 31st league crown, clinched with two matches to spare, lifts their haul to 87 trophies. “Without a very positive Europa League campaign and without player sales by 30 June, it will be hard for this year to show a profit,” said finance chief José Pereira da Costa, who added they will “comply with UEFA rules”, speaking to Zerozero in February.

The Champions League is Porto’s counterweight to suitors. After two seasons out they return for a 28th participation, behind only Real Madrid and Barcelona on 30 and Bayern Munich on 29, and will sample the new format for the first time. Potential debutants include Alberto Costa, Bednarek, Gabri Veiga, Deniz Gul and Pietuszewski, plus head coach Francesco Farioli.
