A Trai Hume own goal after 17 minutes set the visitors on their way to a 5-0 rout of Sunderland on Wearside. Goals from Chris Wood, Morgan Gibbs-White, Igor Jesus and Elliot Anderson completed a superb away performance.
Following the game, Pereira said: “It’s not enough, we need more points. We need to keep our mentality. We cannot relax; we must face the final four games. This is our Champions League. To play the final four games we need to be at Champions League level.”
The former Wolves manager said it was the best 45 minutes he has had in football. “To score four goals in 37 minutes, it’s not easy.
“We have created a spirit, the true spirit of a team, because when we do the subs and when we are celebrating on the bench, we feel that the players want to help the team. We are a family and we are fighting together with our supporters.
“In my mind, we didn’t come here to draw the game. We came here to get the three points because we need more than them and if we need more than them, we need to prove on the pitch that we deserve the three points. We did everything.”
The win adds extra pressure on West Ham and Spurs as they play tomorrow but Pereira insists he will not be watching the game.
He said: “I will not watch the games because I suffer with my games. That’s enough. Maybe I will be at home, maybe drinking a pint but not watching the games.
“If it is in our hands, we must focus on the fight and on winning games. We can not control their results but we can control what we do when we go on the pitch.”
Pereira also revealed he has given his squad two days off as a reward for their performance.
“I’m very happy with the team. That’s why I gave them two days off to give one more day to recover. It is important to be with family, to go out on walks and enjoy two days, then come back really rested.”
After a goal and an assist, Pereira had special praise for Igor Jesus, saying: “What happens with Igor now is he is playing with a striker and when he is playing in between the lines, he is a very dangerous player. He has fantastic skills.”
