Vitor Pereira believes Thomas Tuchel made the wrong call by leaving Morgan Gibbs-White out of England’s latest squad.

According to Nottingham Post, the Nottingham Forest head coach argued the playmaker merited selection after another decisive display. On Sunday he scored in a 3-0 win at relegation rivals Tottenham Hotspur, the club he nearly joined last summer, with Igor Jesus and Taiwo Awoniyi also on target as Forest leapfrogged their opponents and moved three points clear of danger with seven games left.

There was no place for Gibbs-White when Tuchel named his 35-man list last week for Uruguay and Japan. The 26-year-old is now battling to make this summer’s World Cup, while teammate Elliot Anderson appears to be a shoo-in.

Pereira said he respects the national manager’s decision, but in his view Gibbs-White has the quality and character to be involved. He praised the playmaker’s all-round game, from pressing and closing spaces to threatening on the break and in possession, creating and scoring.

He also called Gibbs-White a strong character and a leader. The midfielder is a little sad and disappointed by the omission, Pereira added, but he urged him to stay strong and keep fighting.

Forest could be lifted after the break as Chris Wood nears a return, having featured for the Under-21s on Friday after his knee injury lay-off since October. Pereira said he can now work with the team to build fitness and confidence, and he thinks Wood will be able to help in the next games.
