The Slovak Football Association announced on Tuesday that Vladimir Weiss has returned as national team head coach, succeeding Francesco Calzona.
Weiss previously led Slovakia from 2008 to 2012, taking the Sokoli to the last 16 of the 2010 World Cup, the country’s only appearance at the tournament.
He is currently in charge at Slovan Bratislava and has won six consecutive league titles since arriving in 2021. He will leave the club at the end of the season to take over the national side.
Calzona resigned in April after four years at the helm, following Slovakia’s failure to reach the 2026 World Cup, having lost 3-4 to Kosovo in the play-off semi-finals.
Under Calzona, Slovakia qualified comfortably for Euro 2024, beat Belgium 1-0 in the group stage, then lost 2-1 after extra time to England in the last 16.
