Vojvoda explains choice of João Schmidt for Santos midfield | OneFootball

Juan Pablo Vojvoda has explained why he started João Schmidt in Santos’ draw with Mirassol in the fifth round of the Campeonato Brasileiro. According to Diario Do Peixe, he described it as a tactical move to bolster midfield with three players.

He said the call was based on training performances and the staff’s reading of the game’s demands, with the preparation period before the fixture allowing a fuller assessment of options.

Vojvoda added that he chose Schmidt at this moment for tactical reasons and that he values what he observes in training. He noted there had been time to work, while Christian Oliva’s adaptation is on course and requires patience.

The coach said Oliva is progressing and will be introduced gradually across the competitions. He pointed out that some players, such as Rony and Moisés, already know the Brasileiro, and that Oliva came on against Mirassol and responded well.

Schmidt has featured regularly this season. In the Campeonato Brasileiro he has five appearances, four as a starter, and in the Campeonato Paulista seven, with five starts. He has yet to score or provide an assist.

The draw leaves Santos currently 11th in the Brasileiro on five points. The team next face Corinthians, with the match scheduled for Sunday 15 at 16:00 at Vila Belmiro.
