Santos left Neo Química Arena on Sunday 25 with a 0-0 draw against Red Bull Bragantino, unable to turn possession and midfield recoveries into chances. Head coach Juan Pablo Vojvoda outlined his takeaways and current difficulties.
According to Diario Do Peixe, he felt the midfield three of Arão, Zé Rafael and Menino brought intensity and won the ball high, but the team still lacked end product. He said chance creation remains the missing step.
Vojvoda noted Bragantino’s high press and said the space lay behind their defence. In the first half Santos had two or three moments to threaten, but he stressed the need for consistency. He expected improvement after the interval, and it did not come.
He said the issue now is construction rather than simply finishing, whereas in the first match and late last year the concern was effectiveness and hitting the target. In the last two or three rounds he felt the team lacked connection to create. He also pointed to a congested schedule, matches every two days and rotation making a settled side hard to sustain.
The fifth-round point in the Campeonato Paulista moved Santos to six points and they remain outside the qualifying places, with only the top eight advancing. Capivariano hold the final spot with seven. Three rounds remain, São Paulo and Noroeste away, then Velo Clube at Vila Belmiro.
Focus now turns to the Campeonato Brasileiro, with Santos set to open against Chapecoense on Wednesday 28 at 20:00.
