Cape Verde marked their first ever World Cup match with a heroic 0-0 draw against Spain, Vozinha outstanding as the reigning European champions were blunted despite long spells of dominance. La Roja often worked the ball wide but lacked the tempo to prise openings.

According to L'Équipe, Vozinha set the tone. The 40-year-old Chaves goalkeeper from Portugal’s second tier made seven saves, was once helped by the bar, and dealt comfortably with a stream of crosses. Diney Borges marshalled a narrow, disciplined back four, commanding in the air and in duels.

With Spain on top, Mikel Oyarzabal finally tested Vozinha with a header on 39, then failed with a lob on 53. Nuno Da Costa arrived on 61 to give Cape Verde a stronger outlet than Dailon Livramento.

Spain changed it on 71, Mikel Merino replacing Fabian Ruiz, who had five wayward attempts, and Lamine Yamal coming on for Gavi. Pedri had been among the few to open gaps with dribbles and combinations.

Oyarzabal then saw a late strike diverted by Pico Lopes on 83. Kevin Lenini is presumed to have recorded Cape Verde’s first World Cup shot on target on 90, his effort deflected by Dani Olmo for a corner.

Pedri faded late and took a booking on 90+3 to halt a counter. Livramento managed only 10 touches and struggled to hold the ball up as Spain’s pressure mounted.
