On Monday the Cape Verde goalkeeper starred in a 0-0 draw with Spain, securing his country’s first World Cup point. The 40-year-old was named player of the match and ended in tears as team-mates surrounded him.

He cried because he had been raised by grandparents who have since died, and his mother could not attend due to visa problems. He had not been able to gather the money in time.
