Daily Mail reports that traces of clenbuterol have been found in tests on eight Tunisia players at the 2026 World Cup. The substance could stem from contaminated meat.
The World Anti-Doping Agency’s investigation has, at this stage, ruled out intent after identifying an initial source, although enquiries remain open to dismiss any wider case at the tournament.
Tunisia were eliminated in the group stage of the 48-team finals.
There is precedent. During the 2011 Gold Cup, five Mexico players tested positive for clenbuterol, and WADA later concluded there was no intent because the results derived from tainted meat.
Clenbuterol is a bronchodilator used to treat asthma and is banned by WADA. Some athletes use it to gain strength and muscle. In 2010 Alberto Contador tested positive during the Tour de France, he argued contamination but was banned for two years and stripped of the title.
