Wahbi Khazri remains part of Tunisia’s national team set-up after head coach Sabri Lamouchi was sacked following the 5-1 World Cup loss to Sweden.
The Tunisian football federation said in a statement on Instagram that Lamouchi had been dismissed, adding that plans were under way to appoint Mondher Kebaier on an interim basis.
Khazri is on the coaching staff and stays in place as things stand. Lamouchi, appointed in January, oversaw only five matches before his exit. Tunisia’s build-up included a 5-0 friendly defeat to Belgium in Brussels before the opening 5-1 reverse against Sweden.
Tunisia now face Japan on Saturday at the same stadium in Guadalupe where they lost to Sweden. They finish their group stage against the Netherlands in Kansas City.
For Khazri, 35, it is a striking first major tournament in a backroom role. The former Sunderland forward joined in January 2016 and played a key part in Sam Allardyce’s survival push. He scored in the 2-1 win over Manchester United with a free-kick, set up Lamine Kone’s late winner, and later struck a superb volley in the 3-2 victory over Chelsea.
