Grêmio Atlético Farroupilha have marked their centenary while rebuilding a new stadium after sitting out 2025. According to Globo.com, the Pelotas club also unveiled former Fluminense, Goiás, Athletico and Inter striker Walter, who left a week later without playing.
Presented to fans and briefly in club colours, Walter did not make his debut for personal reasons. Farroupilha compete in the third tier of the Campeonato Gaúcho.
The hiatus is tied to construction costs. The club sold Estádio Nicolau Fico and its prime land in 2024 for about R$ 10 million to pay debts and launch Arena Ninho do Cardeal, but work has stalled and was halted by a court this year in a case from ex-player Igor Padilha over untraced payments.
Before last Wednesday’s Copa FGF debut, a draw with Bagé, their previous official match was on 26 October 2024, a loss to Riograndense in the Terceirona Gaúcha. This Thursday they are set to host at Estrela D’Alva, Guarany’s ground, in Bagé.
In April they played a centenary friendly against Deportivo La Coronilla of Uruguay. In 2025 they assembled a squad but chose not to enter competitions to cut costs and focus on the still-unfinished build.
The club have also featured on Brazilian TV, with Juliano Cazarré’s character Jayme wearing their shirt in Volta por Cima in 2024. Their only state title came in 1935 as 9º Regimento de Infantaria, a triumph linked to the Farroupilha Revolution’s centenary that shaped today’s identity.
