La Liga president Javier Tebas has launched a scathing attack on the Club World Cup, once again making his strong opposition to the tournament clear.
Recently, Tebas posted a harsh message on on his social media, attaching a report from the ‘New York Times’ that highlighted shocking ticket price drops for the semi-final between Fluminense and Chelsea.
Prices fell from $473 to just $13 in 72 hours, exposing major issues with the event’s organisation and fan interest.
Tebas did not hold back in his message. “A truly disastrous Club World Cup: players and leagues at odds, schedules destroyed, and a severely damaged professional football ecosystem, with hundreds of thousands of employees affected,” he wrote.
Tebas continued his rant by highlighting problems with TV revenues and sponsorship deals, suggesting many agreements were made hastily and without proper planning.
He also pointed out how ticket prices had to be slashed just to fill stadiums and noted the tax issues now affecting both players and clubs involved in the competition.
His message ended with a pointed question: “Could it be worse?” before adding, “May God save us from these madmen, please,” taking a clear shot at those promoting the tournament as the future of football.
This criticism is seen as a direct jab at Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, who has claimed credit for helping organise the tournament.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid TV hit back strongly after their team’s victory over Borussia Dortmund. A panelist boldly stated:
“They said they didn’t attract anything and half of the European Cup is there,” praising the matches involving Bayern, PSG, Real Madrid, and Dortmund as a big success for football fans.
“It has been a free day for all the world fans with Bayern-PSG and Real Madrid-Borussia.”
They also took aim at Tebas by sarcastically thanking him for scheduling Real Madrid’s first La Liga match on August 19 at 9:00 p.m., suggesting he could have made it worse by putting it in the heat of the afternoon the day before.
“By the way, the first day of La Liga for Madrid on August 19. We have to be thankful that he has put the match at 9:00 p.m., that he could have put it at four in the afternoon of August 18,” they added.
This exchange shows a growing tension between Tebas and Real Madrid, with the club’s media ramping up what looks like a new anti-Tebas campaign.
