A huge learning curve for the Man United starlet

Manchester United goalkeeper Cameron Byrne-Hughes saw his mind games backfire spectacularly after Benjamin Casey netted a stoppage-time equaliser from the penalty spot as Crystal Palace lifted the Premier League Under-18 cup on Wednesday evening.

Man United, fresh from beating Palace in the FA Youth Cup semi-finals, were on course to make it two wins in the space of a week against the Eagles after Noah Ajayi had given Darren Fletcher’s side a first-half lead at Selhurst Park.

However, a late challenge from Man United defender Albert Mills saw the Reds reduced to ten men, and Palace awarded a spot-kick deep into stoppage time.

Casey stepped up and slotted home the penalty, but not before Byrne-Hughes had attempted to put the Palace striker off by blowing him a kiss as he went to put the ball down on the penalty spot.

The now viral moment acted as little more than motivation for Palace, who went on to win the game on penalties.

Byrne-Hughes, though, was not afforded the opportunity to make amends as Fletcher made the controversial decision to change his goalkeepers ahead of the penalty shoot-out.

The 18-year-old, who had done well to keep Palace at bay in extra-time, came off for Freddie Heath with two minutes of injury time to play.

With Palace scoring all of their penalties, and 15-year-old ‘keeper Lucca Benetton saving from Godwill Kukonki, Fletcher’s decision ultimately did not pay off, though, as the south London club lifted the Premier League cup for the first time.

Man United will have a shot at redemption when they meet Manchester City in the FA Youth Cup final next month.
