The Magpies were held to a draw at Sheffield United Women last time out - but Rachel Furness' stoppage-time header at least meant they returned to Tyneside with a point.
And there was late drama when United last entertained Pompey, too; Georgia Gibson nodded home in the dying seconds at the Gallowgate End at St. James' Park in the semi-finals of the FA Women's National League Cup last February.
Both Portsmouth and Newcastle won promotion from their respective leagues last term but while Newcastle have made a solid start to their debut campaign in the Barclays Women's Championship, the south coast side are still searching for a first win at this level.
United will be determined to ensure that doesn't come this weekend as they look to build momentum in the second half of the season and push for a third successive league title.
Tickets for Sunday's 2pm (GMT) kick-off are on sale here, but supporters who can't make the game will be able to watch live and exclusive on the Official Newcastle United App.
Midfielder Emma Kelly will be part of the commentary team at Kingston Park; she suffered an ankle ligament injury in the recent Women's FA Cup victory over Nottingham Forest.
Becky Langley has brought in three new players during the current transfer window - Poppy Pritchard, on loan from Manchester City Women, Freya Gregory, from Aston Villa Women, and Charlotte Wardlaw from Chelsea Women. Wardlaw started at Bramall Lane last weekend while Pritchard came from the bench, but she could make her full debut against Pompey while Gregory is also pushing for a bow in black and white.
