Watt banned for four games, McInnes can expect at least the same

Watt banned for four games, McInnes can expect much the same or even more. But do the SFA have the bottle?

Motherwell midfielder Elliot Watt has been banned for four games, after to admitting to charges in relation to post match comments after Celtic’s dramatic 2-1 win at Fir Park back in May.

On X, Watt, 26, described the award of a late penalty as “the worst VAR decision in history.”

He was of course referring to Kelechi Iheanacho’s stoppage time winner, which was the result of a clear Sam Nicholson handball, a decision that even though correct, was somehow vilified by our rivals, leading to major and influential figures in the game attempting to gaslight everyone into believing that dark arts were somehow at play.

Watt, who opened the scoring in the game, was charged with breaching the Scottish FA’s disciplinary rule 72, which says players should not “criticise” decisions made by officials or make comments that “impinge” on the character of a referee.

Ironically, Watt will have a further game ban added to his ban due to being sent off on the last day of the season, in the Fir park sides 1-0 win over Hibs at Easter Road.

Motherwell were charged with the same breach and have been fined £5,000 for a post they made after the game, which read: “As the world of football mocks our game, we simply have to draw a line in the sand and shift the focus.”

SFA head of refereeing Willie Collum, even cleared the matter up by stating it was the correct call, but still it hasn’t been enough for some who couldn’t bring themselves to get over it.

One such Individual is now happens to be the Rangers boss Derek McInnes, who was then manager of Hearts, and who described the award as “disgusting” in a bid to deflect from he and his players own failings and the mounting pressure as collective bottles went.

Derek McInnes is due to go in front of the beaks. next Wednesday 22nd July, and if Watt has been handed a four match suspension for saying “it’s the worst VAR decision in history” then one can only assume that McInnes will be handed a much stiffer punishment. Or at least the same.

Or do the SFA have the bottle to do just that? Especially as the individual in the dock is the man who occupies the Ibrox managers office…

Hearts won one of seven away matches, Celtic won all seven of their games in the run-in including a 100% record post split. The latter was the form of Champions, the former the reason why Hearts lost th league. Not VAR calling a decision correctly. Had that handball been against Hearts McInnes would have been screaming for it.

Six games would be a fair and reasonable ban for  McInnes’ ‘disgusting’ outburst.
