ChatGPT has given a list of Championship clubs Josh Windass could join following his Sheffield Wednesday departure

Josh Windass is now officially a free agent after the 31-year-old had his Sheffield Wednesday contract terminated by mutual consent.

Windass is coming off his best league scoring season since the 2015/16 campaign, where he played for Accrington Stanley, netting 13 and assisting a further five times for Danny Rohl's side this season.

Evidently, the 31-year-old will be targeted by fellow Championship sides who would benefit from a goalscorer such as Windass, who finished joint-fifth in the scoring ranks last term. His goals could help a side make that much-needed next step, whether that be into the top six or safely away from relegation into mid-table.

With that in mind, Football League World has asked popular AI-based service ChatGPT to put together a shortlist of teams the 31-year-old could sign for this season, and atop that list were last season's beaten play-off semi-finalists, Coventry City.

AI places Coventry City atop the Josh Windass race following contract termination

According to ChatGPT, Coventry City are the "standout" side who are well-placed to secure the services of Josh Windass ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

AI reckons that the Sky Blues are targeting Championship-proven players in his position, and with Ellis Simms coming off the back of a down season where he only netted six in 43 Championship games and was unused during the play-offs, Frank Lampard could be in for a new central attacker this summer.

Additionally, AI also mentioned West Brom, where Windass would be a key figure in one of the league's bigger sides. However, with the Baggies already bringing in a striker in the form of £4.75 million man Aune Heggebo, Windass' release may have come too late for Ryan Mason's side.

Another side that has improved exponentially up top this summer is Derby County, with Carlton Morris and Patrick Agyemang through the door at Pride Park, but AI still feels that Windass' leadership would be a huge bonus for a side looking to establish themselves in the Championship's mid table.

And Hull City were the final club mentioned by ChatGPT. Windass' hometown, where his father Dean is heralded as a hero, the 31-year-old is yet to play for the Tigers.

Hull's status as a side set to battle relegation once again may drive Windass away, who may be in the hunt for a play-off chasing side. But the sentiment could send him to the MKM Stadium, and his goals could perhaps propel Sergej Jakirovic's side up the table.

Out of all those four, though, Coventry seems best suited for Josh Windass next season, and it's hard to disagree with that fact.

Coventry City may require attacking reinforcements this season

The majority of goals scored by Coventry this season came from players playing around the main striker position. Jack Rudoni netted 10 from attacking midfield, and whilst Haji Wright can play up front, his best position is out wide, where he is still a goal threat.

Ellis Simms was majorly disappointing last season, netting just six times despite registering an xG of 9.94, and was left on the bench in both legs of their play-off semi-final defeat to Sunderland, with Brandon Thomas-Asante and Wright starting either game.

It's to be seen whether Lampard will trust Simms going into the new season, or if a new central attacker is on the shopping list at the CBS Arena. Currently, none have come through the door, but now that someone like Josh Windass has become available, Coventry may move to bring him in.

Windass, like Simms, underperformed his xG last season, but the fact that he was able to score 13 is still impressive. Coventry created the second most big chances in the division last season, so if the 31-year-old can be the focal point of a side that creates an abundance of chances, then he could benefit massively.

Both Coventry and Windass are looking for a taste of Premier League glory - if the former Wednesday frontman joins Frank Lampard's side, then they'd become one of the favourites to achieve it.
