Paul Pogba’s Monaco comeback has stalled, with just over 30 minutes played and a calf issue keeping the 32-year-old out of first-team training. “It’s frustrating, not just for him but for the whole family,” said his brother Mathias. He was speaking to RMC Sport.

Pogba arrived at the end of June and embarked on a three-month fitness plan, but niggles pushed his debut back to November. He had not played for two years because of a doping ban.

“I told him that he couldn’t be back at 100% straight away. We expected better from his return. But this is the reality. The body is not used to this sort of rhythm at high intensity. We aren’t robots. When you come back, you have to do it little by little, otherwise, your body sends you signals and this is what has happened to him.”

He joined to restart his career and with the aim of forcing his way into Didier Deschamps’ France squad for this summer’s FIFA World Cup, ambitions that look increasingly remote.

“We are patient and endurant. He will have to be patient to get back to his best level. It is mentally that it is the most difficult.”

Monaco’s CEO Thiago Scuro has said Pogba’s current “programme” is not working and suggested there could be “another conversation” at the end of the season if nothing changes. He has not given a return date.
