Wolves’ eight-year stay in the Premier League was brought to an end last term as they finished at the foot of the top-flight table, taking 20 points from their 38 league games in a dismal campaign.

They were set to be led on their return to the second tier by Rob Edwards, but in a shock turn of events, there has since been a change of travel in the dugout, with Portuguese coach Cesar Peixoto taking over the Molineux hotseat, aiming to deliver immediate promotion back to the Premier League.

It will be intriguing to see how the 46-year-old will fare in his first English role, but he comes off the back of an impressive season at Gil Vicente, where he guided them to a sixth-placed finish in the Portuguese top-flight.

Meanwhile, for the Baggies, they secured their Championship status by the skin of their teeth last season, with James Morrison doing an incredible job to keep Albion up amidst chaos both on and off the pitch.

It is set to be fireworks when Wolves and West Brom meet in the second tier too, with their first clash scheduled at Molineux on Sunday 20th September, kicking off at midday and shown live on Sky Sports Football.

Meanwhile, the reverse fixture at The Hawthorns is currently on the 20th February 2027, but that is also set to be switched for television coverage nearer to the time.

With both teams looking to be involved towards the top end of the table this term, FLW predicts how Wolves and West Brom will both fare during their first seven games of the season.

When the Championship fixtures were released, Wolves fans were bound to be encouraged by a favourable start, with Cesar Peixoto’s men targeting many, if not all victories from their opening seven league games.

Wolves will welcome the 2026-27 Championship campaign on Friday 14th August, hosting Tony Mowbray’s Blackburn Rovers at an 8pm kick-off.

If there’s any match Wolves could be stunned by, then it is on the opening day, with some players potentially in for a shock at the change of physicality and intensity compared to the top-flight.

However, with Blackburn narrowly fighting off relegation last season, you would expect Wolves to kick off their return to the second tier with all three points, securing a 2-0 victory.

Wolves’ first away game of the new season comes at Deepdale against Preston North End.

The Lilywhites are the embodiment of an established Championship outfit and will be no pushovers in Lancashire. That being said, Wolves should still have enough to get over the line, and are backed to take six points from their opening two games with a 2-1 win on the road.

On the 29th August, Wolves return to their home of Molineux for another Midlands derby against Stoke City, who once again will be looking to get into the promotion mix after disappointing mid-table finishes ever since their Premier League relegation in 2018.

Stoke are renowned for their impressive starts at the beginning of Championship seasons though, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Peixoto’s men held in this one to a 1-1 draw.

After dropping points against the Potters, Wolves would then face the tough prospect of travelling to the London Stadium to take on West Ham, with two teams poised to battle it out at the summit welcoming the month of September in.

Again, with two evenly matched teams, this could well be another draw, with a 2-2 draw projected in East London.

After dropping points against both the Potters and Hammers, Wolves are up against it in another fiery Midlands derby at St Andrew’s against Birmingham City, with that game kicking off at midday on the 6th September.

Blues will themselves be targeting a place in the play-offs now it has extended to the top eight sides, and a fiery encounter like this will make St Andrew’s such a hostile place for Wolves to play in.

Therefore, Wolves are predicted to suffer their first defeat of the season at the hands of their West Midlands counterparts, going down to a 2-1 loss.

But returning to home soil, Wolves will get back on the winning trail against Portsmouth, who are expected to be once again fighting a relegation battle, with Peixoto’s men going on to secure a resounding 3-0 victory.

Wolves’ seventh game of the campaign sees them travel to the Steel City to face off against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane, and the Blades are certainly an unknown quantity going into next season due to their ongoing financial issues.

With chaos and discontent having the potential to ensue at Bramall Lane, Wolves are predicted to go there and notch a 3-1 victory, heading into their tasty Black Country derby against the Baggies.

Overall, from their opening seven games, Wolves are predicted to taste four wins, two draws and one defeat, taking 14 points from a possible 21 on offer.

Moving onto the Baggies, they will be hoping there is no repeat of last season’s relegation scrap, which saw them narrowly avoid the League One trapdoor.

But there’s room for optimism given how James Morrison reinvigorated the Albion side, with the Baggies legend being appointed as the club’s full-time boss.

They kick off their campaign in tough fashion, beginning with an away trip to Norwich City, who mightily impressed under Phillipe Clement and are expected to be in the play-off fray, backed up by their eye-catching capture of Sheffield United's Player of the Season Andre Brooks.

In East Anglia, it could prove to be a disappointing start for Albion, who are predicted to lose 2-1.

The following Sunday sees Albion’s opening home game of the season come against recently relegated Burnley, who will yet again be targeting an instant return to the big time after dropping down to the Championship.

West Brom’s clashes with Burnley do generally yield both entertaining but physical games, and this one is predicted to be yet another one of those, with Albion backed to pick up their first point of the campaign in a 1-1 draw.

On the 29th August, Morrison’s men are back on the road, facing off against the Scotsman’s former employers in Middlesbrough, but it doesn’t bode well for the Baggies given they have lost their last three trips to the Riverside Stadium.

And those struggles could well continue next season, with the Baggies expected to fall to back-to-back away defeats with another 2-1 loss.

The beginning of September sees Albion welcome consecutive matches at The Hawthorns, starting off with a midweek clash against Charlton Athletic.

The Addicks are favoured to suffer second season syndrome in the second tier, so you would favour the Baggies to pick up their first victory of the season and earn a 2-0 victory.

Next up is against Watford, which should follow in a similar fashion given the instability in the Hornets’ dugout, with Albion predicted to squeak to a 2-1 win.

Albion’s away trip to Pride Park against Derby County will see them play three games in a week, and that could well come to be a factor in their downfall back on the road, while Albion haven’t got the better of Derby since July 2020.

Therefore, Albion are again expected to fall to a defeat on their travels, going down 2-0.

West Brom’s seventh game of the season is back on home soil against Queens Park Rangers, once again televised on Sky Sports for a 12:30 kick off on the 12th September.

The Baggies are expected to continue their strong home form under Morrison and are backed to secure a tightly contested 1-0 victory.
