‘We really believe that we can achieve something’: David Hubert confident Union St Gilloise can compete with Atlético Madrid | OneFootball

Union St Gilloise face another tough test in the Champions League when they come up against La Liga said Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night. The Belgian side started the competition with an impressive win over PSV but have since lost back to back games by a scoreline of 4-0. In fairness to Union, these have been against the likes of Newcastle and Inter. However, Atlético Madrid are another tough side for the Belgian’s to be up against in their first Champions League campaign, especially facing them in Madrid.

Speaking to the press ahead of the game, David Hubert was keen to show that he still believes his side have what it takes to get something out of the game. The former OH Leuven head coach said ‘It’s a very balanced team, but they also have weaknesses. When those are exposed, we have to seize our opportunities. We’re realistic, but we truly believe we can achieve something here’.

Union should be able to take some confidence from their domestic form ahead of the clash withAtlético Madrid. The Belgian defending champions go into the fixture with Diego Simeone off the back of a 4-1 away win against newly promoted Zulte Waregem. Their opponents had been playing well so it was a good result for the defending champions as they remain top of the Pro League.

Atlético Madrid themselves are actually in the same situation as Union. The Spanish side have only won one of their three games to start the competition and will be under pressure to beat Union. This pressure may work to Union’s advantage should Atlético Madrid push too much for the victory. Hubert said the side have learned from their two losses so far and he will have to hope that this is truly the case. A draw or an unlikely victory would be a huge result for Union and a historic one at that.
