The Pride were defeated 2-1 by the Barclays Women’s Super League leaders but there were lots of positives to take out of the performance.
When speaking to the media ahead of this weekend’s fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion, London City Lionesses boss Maestre said that he wants to turn pride into points.
“There were two games within the same game [against Manchester City],” Maestre said. “We started with some doubts given the fact that we were facing the top team in the league but once we started recognising what we have worked on during the week, we started feeling more confident in our game plan. We started moving forward and trying to create chances.
“In football, sometimes you get the chances to score and then in the last moment of the game, you concede the second goal.
“If we consider the way they managed the final minutes of the game, time-wasting in the corner and so on, it’s nice to understand how they felt about the game. They were scared about the result and that’s why they tried to waste time.
“I am proud of the team but we want more. We need to keep pushing to get the results.”
This weekend’s opponents Brighton & Hove Albion are just a point ahead of London City Lionesses in the league table. Maestre says that The Seagulls are a great team both with and without the ball.
He said “Brighton are a very good team in possession. They can change shapes within their defending and attacking. They have very talented players in the midfield, the winger and striker positions.
“In possession, they are very dangerous because they have that punishing mindset and they can keep the ball safely too. Out of possession, they are a very aggressive team and are capable of pushing in those moments.
“For me, they are a very well-managed team.”
Commenting on the importance of London City Lionesses climbing above Brighton & Hove Albion the table, Maestre said that the focus is on winning every game.
He said “We prepare for every game with the hope that we will win. We are humble and we always understand that every team has the potential to hurt you and anyone can beat anybody.
“It’s a very beautiful competition that demands a lot. We understand that if we are able to win, others will lose points. We need to focus on ourselves, be connected to our ambitions to win every week. If we perform to the levels that we did last weekend, we have a good chance of winning against every team in the league.”
London City Lionesses’ Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Brighton & Hove Albion kicks-off at 11.55am on Sunday.
