Peter Niemeyer confirmed to BILD that Werder Bremen are hoping to reach an agreement with Romano Schmid over a new deal. The Austrian international is entering the last season of his contract with the club he joined in 2019.

“Of course, it is our ambition not to let a player like Romano (Schmid) go as a free agent,” Werder Bremen’s Head of first team football told BILD. The former midfielder indicated the two parties are working on a potential new contract as Bremen are ready to offer an improved contract.

“We are in constant exchange. The discussions about a possible extension will become concrete shortly. We can very well imagine continuing with him.”

Schmid has been a candidate for departure in previous windows, but there are currently no signs of a summer departure. Bremen will need a high-quality replacement if they decide to sell the attacker in case of no agreement for a new contract.

The 26-year-old currently has a €15 million market value, according to Transfermarkt. The attacking midfielder scored Austria’s first goal of the World Cup in the 3-1 win over debutants Jordan
