Werder Bremen are seeking to extend Romano Schmid’s contract, with the Austrian entering the final year of his deal. The attacking midfielder joined the Bundesliga club in 2019.
“Of course, it is our ambition not to let a player like Romano (Schmid) go as a free agent,” said Peter Niemeyer, Werder Bremen’s Head of first team football, to Bild.
“We are in constant exchange. The discussions about a possible extension will become concrete shortly. We can very well imagine continuing with him.”
Schmid has been a candidate for departure in previous windows, but there are currently no signs of a summer exit. If no agreement is reached and Bremen opt to sell, they would need a high-quality replacement.
The 26-year-old has a market value of €15 million, according to Transfermarkt. He scored Austria’s first goal of the World Cup in the 3-1 win over debutants Jordan.
