Sheffield United will look to extend their excellent run of form on Tuesday evening as struggling Norwich City visit Bramall Lane.
United are in exceptional form. They are unbeaten in their last five games, winning four of those and keeping four clean sheets. Even more impressively, they have scored 13 goals in their last four matches, more than the 11 they had managed all season before this run.
Their latest victory, a comfortable 4-0 win over Stoke City, has led some supporters and even neutrals to start murmuring about an unlikely late play-off push, despite the Blades still being closer to the drop zone than the top six.
Norwich City’s situation is polar opposite. Their 3-2 defeat away at Watford leaves them 23rd and five points adrift of safety. Perhaps the most worrying statistic for the Canaries: they have not kept a clean sheet since August 30th, when they beat a ten-man Blackburn Rovers side 2-0.
Given Sheffield United’s current ruthlessness in front of goal, Norwich could be fearing the worst, especially at Bramall Lane, a ground they have not won at since 2017.
Defensively, they are hit hard again as Harry Darling misses the match through suspension after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season. They could also have over half a dozen players ruled out through injury.
Chris Wilder has several decisions to make regarding personnel, particularly at the back. Ben Mee had an operation on his hand last week after playing multiple games with it in a cast. Mark McGuinness, who replaced him and scored the opening goal against Stoke, was withdrawn at half-time with a “minor ankle injury.”
Wilder said in his pre-match press conference: “We’re assessing that, we’re assessing a few. Delighted for Mark as well, coming into the team, it’s been a difficult start for him. The partnership of Ben and Japh [Tanganga] has been excellent. I thought the skipper’s performance on Saturday was outstanding.”
He also offered praise for Tyler Bindon, noting the defender has shown resilience after a difficult start: “Tyler’s been great around the place, another one who’s had a difficult start to his Sheffield United career, but gives everything in training. Yet again, the door opens. I thought his performance was excellent. I thought the reaction of the supporters was excellent as well, because I’m sure there might have been some hangovers from early on in the season from them as well. From his first action on Saturday, brave diving header, I thought his partnership with Japh was really good.”
Wilder then gave further clarity on Mee’s situation: “The good thing about it is obviously, he can do work, he can do all the stuff, it’s just the contact that he has to keep clear of.”

Wilder confirmed he is expecting a fierce challenge despite Norwich’s league position: “Norwich City are a club we know very very well. There’s been a change of manager and I know definitely there’s been a culture change there because football is a game in which you hear a lot of things. [Clement] has put a rocket up them and looking at their performances as well that’s certainly happened.
He added: “I think they were unlucky not to get a result on Saturday. They’ve got quality players all over the pitch and he’s trying to put them together like I was trying to put our lot together. He’s had to do it later than what I did so no doubt they’ll get results.”
Wilder also addressed ongoing discussions with Jairo Riedewald and Patrick Bamford regarding their futures: “I’ve spoken to both boys and they want to commit but their representatives will obviously put the options they’ve got on the table. It has to be right from a lot of points but the initial one between manager and player is really positive and the vibe coming back is they’d like to stay.”
Sheffield United will hope to continue their surge and climb further away from danger and up the Championship table. They have an excellent chance to do that under the lights at Bramall Lane on Tuesday evening against a wounded Norwich City.
