Nico Williams was clearly the top target for FC Barcelona as they looked to strengthen their left-wing position in the last summer transfer window. The Catalans remained linked with the Athletic Club winger throughout the summer, but the move ultimately failed to materialize because of the Blaugranes’ financial problems and the Basque club’s pressure.
However, their links with the Spanish forward have still not died down, and Barcelona are expected to once again try to incorporate him into their squad in the next summer transfer window.
Meanwhile, the winger himself continues to enjoy good relations with several Blaugrana players. However, his relation with Lamine Yamal is particularly special. As SPORT has reported, the Spaniard shed some light on this relationship in a recent interview that he gave to Jorge Valdano.
Talking about his triumphant UEFA EURO 2024 campaign, the 22-year-old Athletic Club winger said:
“We had an incredible, wonderful group. Luis de la Fuente has found the right approach. A more direct style of play that benefited both Lamine and me. Two wingers who love to take on opponents, and midfielders who push forward a lot. The team we had was the best—not necessarily in terms of big names, but definitely as a collective.”

Nico Williams continued to talk about his special relationship with €180m-rated Barcelona superstar:
“Both Lamine and I felt quite comfortable. It felt like being on a camping trip with them; we were having so much fun, and it showed on the field. I think that cheekiness when taking on opponents was evident. We’re both a bit wild. They had to rein us in from time to time—Morata was always behind us.”
“We showed our personality on the field. He’s not just a teammate; he’s a friend. I’m his father (laughs), and he knows it perfectly well.”
Similarly, he also expressed his surprise to see Marc Casado’s quality: “I was blown away by him. Happy to have shared the locker room with them; they make me a better player.”
With this interview, Nico once again showed his affection for some of Barcelona’s players. He has already shown that his relationship with Yamal can bear fruit on the pitch as well with Spain, and Blaugrana fans will be hoping they can play together in the blue and garnet jersey as well at some point in the future.
